Do you realize that no matter what you do, right now somewhere in the world someone is the very best in the world at what you do? I remember a movie from 1979 called “The Jericho Mile” produced by Michael Man and starred Peter Strauss. I heard it was based on a true story. The story is that Rain Murphy the main character is in Folsom prison for life. He has taken up running as a way to deal with prison life. The story goes that Rain Murphy is discovered by someone as being a real contender and he can run a four-minute mile and so they start training him for the Olympics but at the last minute they deny him the opportunity to run in the Olympic raceSo the day comes when the race is to be run and they play the race over the loudspeakers and Rain Murphy is out there on the racetrack and when the starting gun cracks he takes off, using a starting block and he runs as they’re broadcasting the race to live over the radio and he beats the guy who wins the gold medal! I like this story because it illustrates the fact that the world recognizes a particular person as the best in the world at this particular activity but yet there is someone somewhere else in the world is better but they have not been recognized by the world. They have not received a trophy or a contract to endorse some product they just do it for the pure satisfaction of being the best that they can be.
I tell you all this for the simple reason to say that you must have a motivation for doing a good job. You need a good reason to get up in the morning and go to work and to try to accomplish your duty for your employer and to just be the best that you can be. This is where real satisfaction comes from when you know that you have given your all that you have used every ounce of talent that God has given you to accomplish your task at hand. If you look up in Webster’s dictionary the two words; Career it says that upward progression or an increase in responsibility. But if you also look up the word calling; it says an inward urging or desire to accomplish a task. Everyone can have a career but not everyone finds their calling. If you can find your calling and you have this inward urging or desire to accomplish something then you will have satisfaction. Be all that you can be; find something that fulfills the desires of your heart. Remember what the professor said “There is always room at the top for the best!” The best job security you could possibly have is to be indispensable to your boss I cannot stress that enough.
Important Concept: There really is someone who is the best in the world at what you do! Is it you? Here we go, it’s all about DESIRE once again!
